Subject: Help with leaky chain plates
Info: (13583 views) Posted: Tuesday 5-13-14 09:22:46 PM
Hi Paul

I have decided to cut the top skin and do it right.

You mention not to put epoxy in the screw holes. How else would you do that? I am using the west system and normally put on Vaseline on the screws to cast in place.

Thanks

Don

:: Cut the top skin an replace the core. I just did this to
:: both sides but much bigger areas and the mast step area.

:: You could cut the skin, remove the wet core an bag in
:: the new core in the same day, actually 90 min. Then 4
:: he's later fair it in an hour an put the top skin on
:: bagged again. Then roll gel coat for a texture match.
:: Easy job for such a small area. And you should use a
:: quality vinylester resin.
::
:: Are you talking about putting epoxy in the chainplate
:: holes? If so I would not do that.
::
:: :: I know one of the chain plates was starting to leak and
:: :: I took them apart tonight.
:: ::
:: :: I intend on dropping them and filling with epoxy then
:: :: drilling them out to install back to normal.
:: ::
:: :: In examining them, I discovered there is a small area of
:: :: deck rot. About 4 x 3 inches to the aft. My question is
:: :: this:
:: ::
:: :: Do I drill a series of holes and fill with epoxy as I do
:: :: the work mentioned above, or do I cut the top layer of
:: :: deck off and rebuild the core?
:: ::
:: :: I am putting the boat in the water in 8 days so any
:: :: quick info is very much appreciated.
:: ::
:: :: Thanks
::
:: :: Don
