Subject: Life without winch pads
Info: (20268 views) Posted: Tuesday 3-18-03 06:18:00 PM

My boat came with Lewmar 24s and no teak winch pads. I've been planning to put them back on (they came with the old winches in a box of stuff), but based on the Override thread maybe I'll reconsider. Not having the winch pads we get lots of overrides, particularly with the #1. My crew only uses 2 wraps ever, and then they just manhandle the thing in--I'm waiting for the cleat to rip out of the deck...

I use blocks on standups as fairleads, and I tried to get them as low as I could. If I could get them just a little lower, I'd probably be OK. I'll probably just use large eye-straps or something as fairleads.

In any case, no teak winch pads = overrides, just in case you were wondering. But I never have trouble with the line hanging up on the pads :)

Does anyone out there have the perfect setup?
