We came up with a system that works very well. First of all get rid
of the wire at the end of the outhaul and go to spectra to save
yourself from any more of those metal slivers and of course for
weight.
Second, you want to use two tripple blocks on the inside of the boom
to give you enough purchase under load. One should be floating and
the other secured at the forward end of the boom.
Third, get rid of the jam cleat where the old outhaul exits the boom
and install a single through-deck block. Make sure you put it in the
correct way though. The line will be coming form the front of the
boom, exiting through this block and then going forward again. You
will understand later.
Fourth, you want to install a Ronstan V-cleat (not the open kind)
that contains the line in the cleat. Make sure it is forward enough
on the boom to get your hand between the cleat and the through block
in order to release it.
Next, you want to mount a small swivel turning block on the boom
where the boom vang attaches. The outhaul will now run out the
through-deck block, then through the 'V' jam-cleat and then through
the turning block.
You can now pull from any direction to bring in the outhaul and it
cleats itself easily. To release, you slide your hand between the
line and the boom, and pull down to release out of the cleat.
It works great!
