There's a lot to be said for simplicity and minimalism in boat
rigging. I use the port-side cabin top winch and a horn cleat to
tension my jib halyard, a system I copied from the legendary Leon
Russell. Jib luff tension is easy to adjust, and the jib comes down
like a ton of bricks as the spinnaker goes up. The main halyard
terminates at a horn cleat on the port side of the mast a couple of
feet up from the deck. Voila!--No clutches which slip and/or wear out
the halyard tails, leak water into the balsa core in the deck and
scrape the knees of the crew when tacking.
