Author: Joe B Subject: Rudder Bearings Info: (13907 views) Posted: Monday 2-9-15 01:05:15 PM |
$75 dollars to recut them to my specs that I measured with a caliper.
This is my second set of bearings. First new ones lasted about 9 years. 1st time I took the rudder to Buzz to measure rudder post. All fit well except the upper bearing was too tall, so I shaved that down myself since height tolerance is not absolutely critical on the upper.
Any excessive up and down movement will wear the bearing out, so Buzz provided for few upper washers in different thicknesses.
My first set, I sealed in the lower with some 3M 4200, but not the 5200 stuff (others reported hard to remove later). The 4200 adhesion did not last despite a good prep and repeated application a few years later. I believe there is not much for the adhesive to grab onto except the top of edge of the lower bearing. I used silicone to hold in place the upper bearing.
This second set I did not use any adhesive since the outside diameters are pretty snug.
I would like to hear from others about about sealing the bearings.
