Subject: gelcoat repair
Info: (24601 views) Posted: Tuesday 1-25-05 08:03:37 AM
I have used Marine Tex on an Olson 30 and my Express 27 for the same type of problem and it works well. Rock hard and water impermiable. Dig open the blistyer with a small sharp tool, dry well. Then use the Marine Tex. Don't use to much as it is very hard. Sand down to smooth and it will blend in and not show and can be sanded very smooth.

::
:: :: Soliticing some advice on two repair topics. First, i've
:: :: got some minor gouges where the old pads use to make
:: :: contact with the hull. Laminate is exposed but not
:: :: damaged. I'm thinking of using 3M vinylester to fill in
:: :: the area and then have it spray gelcoated to best match
:: :: the original color. Was thinking another route was to
:: :: just use a matched color gelcoat paste and fill and
:: :: fair.
:: ::
:: :: Second, I've noticed some surface blisters under the old
:: :: pads. I don't know if these are worth even bothering
:: :: with but I'm thinking of lightly scraping/popping,
:: :: drying and refilling the section with either a
:: :: vinylester or again the gelcoat paste. Afterwards,
:: :: covering the pads with Poly sheeting to prevent moisture
:: :: retention.
:: ::
:: :: Thanks!
::
:: No help on the repair, but for prevention I use closed
:: cell foam from a camping sleeping pad. It has a 1/2"
:: compression to spread the load on the hull and doesn't
:: retain water
