Subject: Re: Life without winch pads

We have two speed winches without teak pads under them. We also have harken stand-up blocks just forward of the winches which are also used for cross sheeting. We rarely get over-rides although it has happened before. It seems to be a combination of keeping tension on the jib sheet during the tack in addition to having the proper angle from the over-ride preventer and the winch. I think 10 degrees is what I have heard to be the optimum angle.

I may try putting a thin pad under the winches to increase the angle.

Dan, what would you say is the angle from the eyelet to the winch on your boat?

Jason
