I agree with all of Ralph's comments as well, but have an alternative to the masthead light. If you affix a flashlight to the backstay wire shinning upwards, it works great to illuminate the masthead fly. I even made a carrier that stays on the backstay and allows you to change out flashlights. This was very helpful during the Coastal Cup when sailing all night.
