If your top full batten catches on your backstay, try this as an alternate. I mounted a small ss bracket on the side of the crane. This bracket allow me to slide in a small dia. solid fibreglass pultrusion that is approx. 6 ft long. This is attached to the bracket via holes and split pins. At the other end I tied a small mini-block with ss wire. The backstay goes through the mini-block and the "whip" holds the backstay out just far enough that the back of the leech doesn't trip on the backstay.

This adds a little weight to the top of the mast, but the system works without a hitch. Epoxy can also be used instead of fibreglass. you may have to experiment to find be right length and dia. to use for your purpose. The trick is to make sure that the backstay can be let off, yet fully tensioned without breaking.

Good luck, it does work.
