I don't think there has ever been an official max horsepower rating. However, too much horsepower or weight can damage the internal motor mount tube. Also, too much weight at the back end of the boat is not desirable. I recall one case where the tube cracked from somebody standing on the motor mount and another where cracks developed for no apparent reason. They are easy to repair if you catch the crack before the damage is severe, anyway. Simply get some fiberglass tape and wrap it around the tube with plenty of epoxy. I agree witht the comments that a long shaft 4-6 hp is plenty. I use a 2 hp Suzuki. The only time I wish I had more horsepower is for a long trip up the Detroit or St Clair River.SWX4
