:: Here are my thoughts on this new IRC rule and how it:: applies to One Design Classes. The association for IRC
:: does not give out one rating to all One Design boats.
:: Each boat must measure its self, and apply every year.
:: That also includes a fee every year and no guarantee
:: that all the rating will be the same for One Design
:: Boats.

:: What does this rule do for us? The DRYA fleet races are
:: scored by the order in which you cross the finish line.
:: The rates are only for overall results. Who cares! WE
:: know how we did in our fleet, that’s all that maters.
:: The only thing this rule is going to does to our fleet
:: is divide us because the rating may come out different
:: and who gets their boat rated and who does not. So if
:: you don’t get the rating you will not get scored in
:: overall results. I comes down to who is willing to pay
:: for this. For the weeknight beer can races we will be
:: still using PHRF rule.

:: I suggest the best thing we can do, as a fleet is to
:: boycott this rule for the good of One Design racing. If
:: IRC gave fleets a One Design Rating I might consider the
:: Fleet gets a rating for overall results. We do not need
:: the extra cost and aggravation just to get overall
:: results.

:: I want to hear your thoughts.

:: The last commonly used measurement rule for small boats in California was MORC. They did eventurally give manufacturer's ratings for 1 designs for local racing, but like all measurement rules an Express being very light is hammered due to
light weight being a "speed producing factor." I bet IRC needs the money from measurements to pay for the administrative :work. I kinda doubt we'll ever see a measurement rule that doesn't penalize ultra- light displacement. In MORC we started building custom boats that hauled butt and weighed quite a bit- they were very fast upwind and on reaches AND rated well. Unfortunately, these boats priced people out of the system and generally led to the fall of MORC racing locally.
