Subject: Reefing -forbidden?

:: You should never need to reef unless you are going out
:: in the ocean. The rest of the time you should be able to
:: sail with a smaller headsail and keep the boat on its
:: feet. Keep the sails flat and feather to keep the boat
:: flat. If you are sailing in a lot of chop then you want
:: to ease the jib a bit and twist off the main.

:: :: Do you guys ever reef? I did not see any picture of
:: :: reefed main.

:: :: Anyone? What set up do you have?

I've reefed once a long time ago on the Lighten-up. It was blowing very hard, we had reeefed to the first reef point bringing the headboard down to the hounds. And, then had to lead a 75% 3/4 hoist #4 to the rail for further depowering. I do have a main with reef especially for the ocean. MORA rules required a reef, although our current SF OYRA rules do not . . . which I think is a mistake.
