Good point (re undue harshness) and good question (re: required modifications.) The boat was beautifully restored, and the modifications were ingenious. My impression was that the main bone of contention was the under-the-deck cross jib sheet winch arrangement which allowed the winches to be powered from the windward side of the cabin by a crew sitting on the rail and the sheets trimmed from the high side cockpit rail.
