Personally, the tuning guide seems a bit overboard when it comes to tapering every last line on the boat. Most of the high-tech lines (especially Vectran) seem to wear poorly when exposed, or at least the few tapered lines on my boat do. My feeling is, if you really want to save weight aloft on a boat this size, use a thinner double braid on the main halyard (I use 5/16" Yale Crystalyne), loop the halyard through the headboard twice and tie a figure eight instead of using a shackle. Melges 24's seem fond of doing this WITH a tapered halyard...whatever. Needless to say, I use a Wichard shackle anyway. Other than that, Marlow Super Pre-Stretch makes a great, cheap line for a spin hal - rarely hockles and runs great during a douse...and I use 5/16" Samson Ultra-Tech (Technora core) for the jib hals (cheaper than vectran-core and just as good for the headsails).
