Subject: Bulkhead cracks?
Info: (17032 views) Posted: Monday 12-11-06 02:30:06 PM
Is there a class rule that limits the brace to wood? Could aluminum channel be used?

::
:: Hi Dave:
::
:: Kim Desenberg did the Desperado bulkhead structural
:: repair in 1994 at NCY for around a quoted $1800 that
:: turned out to be more like $3000 . . . its probably a
:: lot more now at KKMI.
::
:: The Lighten Up was repaired earlier than Desperado and
:: uses a similiar method . . .albeit less bullet proof
:: than the Desperado's overbuild.
::
:: Jason from Moxie used the bolt two pieces of plywood to
:: the bulkhead method and did it himself.

:: Let me know when your around Brickyard Harbor and I'll
:: meet you there to see the repair.
::
:: Mike
::
::
:: :: Mike,
:: ::
:: :: Who did your repairs? Also, do you have any photos? I
:: :: would like to get mine fixed before too long. I'm also
:: :: going to try to get my deck resurfaced soon.
:: ::
:: :: Thanks,
::
:: :: Dave

:: :: ::
:: :: :: Hi: Dave:
:: :: ::
:: :: :: The rig of you boat is compressing through the deck and
:: :: :: warping the upper horizontal bridge of support.
:: :: ::
:: :: :: The legs which hold up the horizontal support on the
:: :: :: front side of the bulkhead may also be warping . . .and
:: :: :: the bulkhead in plane can itself warp and buckle.
:: :: ::
:: :: :: The first 30 boats all suffered this compression issue .
:: :: :: . . where the legs of the support do not tranverse the
:: :: :: flat plane of the V-berth all the way down to within an
:: :: :: inch of the hull. Your's may or may not. Mine do now.
:: :: ::
:: :: :: I had the horizontal wood pieces fore and aft removed,
:: :: :: the vertical legs removed, new full length legs forward,
:: :: :: partial legs aft.
:: :: ::
:: :: :: Beefy'er timber was used on the Deperado's upgrade. Some
:: :: :: people simply sandwiched the bulkhead with two pieces of
:: :: :: marine plywood.
:: :: ::
:: :: :: A jack is sometimes used to push the bulk head
:: :: :: upstraight again prior to regluing the new beefy'er
:: :: :: supports.
:: :: ::
:: :: :: Mike
:: :: ::
:: :: ::
:: :: :: ::
:: :: :: :: I've got a small crack in my bulkhead. Anyone else seen
:: :: :: :: similar problems? I've got some ideas of how to fix it,
:: :: :: :: but want to see if anyone else has some prior experience
:: :: :: :: with this repair on these boats.
