Subject: Target Boat Speed Upwind
Info: (11058 views) Posted: Thursday 6-3-10 08:55:26 PM

:: New to the Express here in Hood River OR ( The Gorge )
:: and I'm starting to get the boat dialed in. We do not
:: have any other Express' to tune against and I don't see
:: a chance to get to SF Bay until the Fall at the
:: earliest, if this season at all. I've set the boat up
:: according to the guide in the Articles section.
::
:: 90% of our racing is with the #3 (18+). Downwind we are
:: dialed. Upwind we are fast, but it's hard to tell
:: without another boat to compare to.
::
:: Assuming our speedo is calibrated correctly, what should
:: we be shooting for with the #3 up going to weather?
::
:: We have a couple well sailed Moore 24's here. How should
:: my upwind performance compare with theirs - pointing and
:: boatspeed?
::
:: Thanks for the help. Absolutely love the boat.

A question I've always wondered about. I've had to recalibrate speedo a few times and I think it is close to accurate. I find with the #3 a speed of 5.4-5.7 keeps my boat with those boats that are setting the pace. Above 6 and I'm not pointing with the fast boats. I don't know if my numbers are true targets. I regard the speedo as not strictly accurate but a handy device to judge boat speed in the absence of other express'. SDK
