The Ballenger method of attaching the in-line lowers to the intermediate chain plates works fine. In my opinion, it's not necessary to install a separate chain plate for the in line lower. A drawing from Ballenger for the installation is posted on the "Deck Layout and Rigging" Gallery in the photo section of the website.

I would like to have an easily adjustable aft lower set-up as Ed describes. However, for one design class racing it's not legal to adjust the aft lowers during a race. Being able to adjust the aft lowers would be a big advantage for PHRF because the aft lowers limit how far you can rock the mast forward.
