Russ,

Not a stupid question at all. The way I have always done it is to thoroughly strap the boat to the trailer. I have use lines in the past but those big, 2" thick ratchet-type webbing straps work best. The long ones that will go from one side of the trailer, up over the boat and back to the trailer. Do this 3 or 4 time down the length of the boat. You also want to make sure the boat doesn't slide backwards, so use one strap to pull the boat forward on the trailer.

Hope that helps.
