There are no specific rules on tiller construction other than the general prohibition on "exotic and expensive equipment". A super light custom carbon tiller could raise questions, but probably wouldn't save enough weight to be worth building one, or even worth complaining about one that someone built.

The good news is that the original wooden tillers are still available! They are made by H&L marine and are the same as the Catalina 22 tillers (Part number H&L-100F) Svendsens has them in their catalog and can order them for you (be sure to specified "F" for finished or you will get an unfinished one).

APS also has them (HM100F) on their website ($86) (www.apsltd.com).

In the off chance someone has made a custom tiller for your boat (with corresponding tiller head), H&L marine will make custom tillers. You can order custom tillers through APS (and probably through Svendsens as well)
