GPS driven compasses can be programed with magnetic variance and work just as well as KVH or TackTic. The only problem is that currents and tides can mess with the heading. But if there's a $800 price tag on fixing the KVH it might be time to consider a RockBox or Voleciek for $200 less.

Not to mention there's no mess of wires to deal with. On Evolution the only wires we have anymore are for the lights and depth sounder.
