When I replaced mine I took the original into west marine and though it was almost 10 years ago now I'm pretty sure the J24 tiller was the closest sp I bought it. It is basically the same length but it has more curve to it.
The tiller I bought has worked fine. I think the main thing is you have roughly the same length (same leverage but not so long as it hinders your movement), enough curve to make it over the lip to the cockpit, and of course the strength to withstand a wicked broach :-)
If I were to do it again I might try to build something super light and cool but I would have to check that it was not considered "exotic" under the rules.
