Subject: Ditch Run Rule?

In a recent discussion with the organizer, the current thinking is that the Ditch Run will continue to use regular PHRF ratings this year, but may post hypothetical results if the new downwind ratings were to be used. This would give some time for feedback before committing to the new untested downwind ratings.

I, for one, would be opposed to setting a minimum headcount and will continue to do this event with 3 people on board. On a Moore 24, two is the ticket, but on an Express you may give up in boat handling what you save in weight if you sail with only 2. I know that the E27 winner the last 4 years (maybe longer?) has had 3 people on board. I haven't noticed any E27s with 2 people and they certainly haven't been out in the front at the end.

As for post-race inspections, I truly hope that everyone in the class continues to race fairly and abides by class rules for this race. I have no reason to believe that folks have been skimping on gear for this race. We certainly had everything required (and more) for the past couple class wins in this race.

:: I would like to float the idea of setting a minimum
:: headcount for the Ditch Run. I think this is great,
:: unique race that should be shared with as many people as
:: possible and seeing the boats with 2 people on board
:: while fun and challenging, is unfortunate for all of
:: those left behind.
::
:: I am not sure how the Express will stack up to an
:: overall win using the new downwind PHRF rating so we
:: should probably focus on building our class profile
:: instead of fighting the Moore and Melges for an overall
:: spot.
::
:: I think this would help build the class reputation as a
:: fun and inclusive group of sailors.
